Why Teaching?

My road to teaching isn’t the typical story. While in grad school, I took a job teaching undergraduate biology and microbiology labs. Little did I know how much I would love it! It was so awesome showing students how fun and interesting science can be. I had never thought about teaching before and had no idea how fulfilling this job can be. After graduation, I decided to pursue an alternative certification to teach high school science. This is now my 12th year teaching! I’ve spent the last nine years teaching biology and AP biology. I recently took some time off to care for my daughter at home but while enrolling her in a homeschool academy, I found out that they needed a science teacher. I just couldn’t stay away! I’m now teaching a variety of science courses from earth science to chemistry two days a week. Teaching is truly my passion and I absolutely love seeing students who may have once said “I’m not good at science” finally succeed and feel proud of themselves.

Why Science?

Students in a classroom will often ask “Why do I even need to know this?” In science, the answer is almost always the same…because it’s going on right now either all around you or in you! From learning why elements bond the way they to do when forming complex molecules to learning how the digestive system works from entry to exit, science always proves to be relevant to our personal lives and rewarding to know and understand. For example, in order for a cell to divide it must first replicate. It sounds completely crazy but it’s true! And matter can go from a solid to a gas without being in a liquid state in between! And at any given moment during the day, you’re covered inside and out with more bacterial cells than animal cells. Science is just mind-blowing!
